Best Scene in Weeds Ever

I'm mowing through "Weeds" like a 13 year-old trying to save up for a Wii.  So I figured I'd share my favorite part.

As an introduction to this scene.  It starts with the house having plumbing troubles, after a complete drainage failure a plumber is called in who announces to the widow mother that her pipes are clogged with tube socks that were being flushed down the toilet.  The plumber suggests that if the widow has any sons that are around 11 or 12 she should consider having "the talk" with them.

So our widow mother tries to have a talk with her boy, but it doesn't work out so well, so she asks her brother-in-law to have the talk with him instead.  Here's the clip:

I’m Not Easily Frightened but…

This scares me.

A program that can mimic online flirtation and then extract personal information from its unsuspecting conversation partners is making the rounds in Russian chat forums, according to security software firm PC Tools.

The artificial intelligence of CyberLover's automated chats is good enough that victims have a tough time distinguishing the "bot" from a real potential suitor, PC Tools said. The software can work quickly too, establishing up to 10 relationships in 30 minutes, PC Tools said. It compiles a report on every person it meets complete with name, contact information, and photos…

Among CyberLover's creepy features is its ability to offer a range of different profiles from "romantic lover" to "sexual predator." It can also lead victims to a "personal" Web site, which could be used to deliver malware, PC Tools said…

[PC Tools' vice president Mike] Greene said that the perceived anonymity of the Internet has desensitized people to the fact that information disclosed in an online chat can cause real-world damage.

"People are used to not opening attachments or maybe not clicking on a link that shows up in their IM," he said. "But this emulates a real conversation, so you more are likely to give over personal information, click on a link or send your photograph."

This is real sci-fi territory folks.  From there it's a nudge to the left and you're into real-life Artificially Intelligent viruses contaminating your networks.  I'm convinced that someone WILL write that code, and it's a shame too, it'll be just like pissing in the tub you're taking a bath in.

On Edge This Morning

Can't do too much right today…

Showed up a half-hour earlier than when my super told me I need to be here, but it was 20 minutes later than I usually show and apparently that's too late now…

Then I screwed up a pot of coffee when our water is under tight rations… >.<

It's a pressure test today, and there's a good deal of inherent danger in this sort of thing.  So with all this and I can't shake that twinge of worry in the pit of my stomach.

I'll be happy when today is over.

Ribbon in the Sky

So a few days ago, my good friend Ian and I were driving along and we came across an interesting visual spectacle… being that both of us were mildly interested in it, we snapped a few pictures… about 37 in all… with my mom's camera which we stole from her place for this expressed purpose.

Like I said… mildly interested.

It's a gravity wave of steam from the pulp mill over the hill… I wish I had video, it really was flowing like a ribbon in the sky.

Fruz-trated…

Posts have been scarce from me of late… all across the board actually.  I'm just not finding that sweet hot brand of inspiration jabbing into my brain these days.  So I do what I always do when I should be writing something but aren't.  I read, and watch stuff and enrich my life with an infusion of news and pop culture.

That's likely the problem actually, I'm unfocused, not concentrating on a given subject enough to form some cohesive thoughts… news drains creative inspiration and modern TV ravages my analitical capabilities.  So I wish and wash between ideas, rarely being able to settle long enough to accomplish something substantial.

Creatively I want to work on something involving spanish treasure, lost gods and tropical jungles… just trying to figure out the plot.

Professionally I need to understand internet coding better… so I can understand the back end of the websites I'm involved with…

And personally I'd just like to bring something interesting to you guys to generate some neat and inspiring comments… I've also got an assignment from Patricia that I keep in the back of my mind, but all the topics seem lame.

And with all this flopping around in my mind like a soggy rubber suit in the dryer, I seem not able to get anything accomplished at all.  At least my game went well last night, it seems that when my productivity is at it's worst my ability to run a consistant role-playing game is at it's strongest.  It's like discipline and creative energy wax and wane in cycles… I wish I could understand them better so to capitalize.

If You’re Not with Me, then You Might as Well Hold Your Arms Out to Be Shackled!

This will be my fourth post tagged "freedom".

I write this because it's been on my mind a lot lately.  I've been increasingly frustrated with people who do not share my values regarding freedom.  It seems that there are more than a few people who rather than setting it lower on their list of priorities, out and out disagree with the very concept.

My most recent frustrations with people who disagree with freedom as a fundamental concept began here, and my mood on the subject hasn't improved, instead it's been stewing and steaming and pissing me off more and more.  If you take the time to read the post and the comments I left you might wonder what Torturing terrorists has to do with freedom?  I'll tell you, it's just an example of how the powers that be are eroding core values of life and liberty and it's people are letting it happen.  Seriously, if the American people are allowing such a heinous and barbaric act such as torture to happen right under their noses and not care, what will they take a stand against?

I am a student of history, and one of the things I read more and more about is the founding of America.  I understand what bravery it took for America's founding fathers to pen the Declaration of Independence.  Back then America was not a superpower.  It was a fledgling country desperately trying to prevent being further carved up by the decadent empires that existed at the time.  The founding fathers penned their constitution based on the principle I revere so much.  Freedom.  Every man, woman and child was entitled to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, what more could you really want?

The American bill of rights is in my opinion one of the greatest achievements of modern man, however I think that a lot of those rights aren't properly understood.  I will do my best to explain the ones that I think modern American's are losing sight of…

The First Amendment addresses the right to freedom of religion, as well of freedom of expression, the press, assembly, and petition.  I've heard some people argue that freedom of religion is to make governments support atheism… not true.  The spirit of the amendment is based around the fact that there shall be no state-sponsored religion, and every person is entitled to practise whatever religion they so choose without persecution.  This amendment existed because many of the powers in Europe, particularly England had a state-sponsored religion.  The King of England was also the leader of the church of England… and throughout the middle ages, most kings were granted their right to rule by the pope.  America decided to have none of this, believing that politics should not be beholden to a god, and I applaud them for this.

The Second Amendment addresses the fact that a well regulated militia would be necessary to maintain a FREE state.  Modern rednecks call this "the right to bear arms" which comes off as a bit pretentious, and misses the original intent of the article.  The second amendment is about enabling the people to protect their freedom with force if needed.  If a force were to attempt to take away that freedom, then the people would take up arms against it.  This is in stark contrast to the mood today as it seems that the general populace seems helpless and castrated, unwilling to protect it's self as it hands over it's liberties to the state in return for protection from largely fictional entities.

The Fifth Amendment is what most people believe to be the "not talk in court" one.  The specific text is this:

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

That means no torture assholes!  It also means the people are protected from state-sanctioned seizures, or unjust executions or imprisonments without a trial by a fair and impartial jury.  The sixth amendment covers more of the details of the public trials.

The eighth amendment regulates bail fines and prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.  I don't need to explain what that means, nor how it's being ignored…

And lastly today I come across this article about how nearly half of the country wants Uncle Sam to dictate what's an appropriate video game for their kids to play.  Why not just out and out say it?  You're shitty parents and you don't know how to say no to your children, so you want the government to say it for you!

How does such a fine independent country fall so far?  Where did it change from a governing body providing order to a nation, to a populace demanding that the most trivial decisions must be made for it?

Horrors of User Agreements

Hi guys.  I've been away because guilt (usually my #1 motivator) has kept me away from the keyboard.  I've not been doing the work I'm supposed to regarding some of my other writing projects, and that in turn has kept me from writing for pleasure.  Bad me.

Anyhow I'm trying to haul my atrophied limbs back over the saddle-horn and I'm reaserching a blog I want to do about user agreements.  So if any of you know of any delightful user and license agreement horror stories, that you can back up with a link I'd love to hear about them.

Or, if you don't read user agreements (big shocker there, I don't either), you can send me all sorts of fun information about internet invasions of privacy.  I love that stuff too.

I Have a Counterpoint Commenter

Lately I've been uninspired to write anything and it's been showing.  I still comment a lot though.

Over the last few days I got involved with some discussions near and dear to my heart and when that happens I get a bit overzelous in my comments.  Nothing I'd say is straying into fanboi ignorance or god forbid putting me in the same camp as some of the more ignorant flametards I'm sure we've all encountered, but enough that I could definitely rub someone the wrong way.

So for the first time on Vox I ran into someone I strongly disagreed with on an issue.  It's not often I strongly disagree with anything, I'm pretty easy going for the most part… but some things upset me.

By upset me what I really mean is that I cannot express how much I dispise these things and in general my purpose in life is to eradicate them.  Crack is one of these things.  I hate crack, and I hate crackheads, I think that all crackheads should be fed crack continuously until they die.  So when I say something upsets me, and you support that particular thing… my feelings are that you can consume whatever it is you stand for until you choke on it.

Over the course of my commenting the past few days I found a supporter of a topic that upset me, and I made my feelings clear, mostly because I was so shocked that he could support it.  I think I was reasonably diplomatic, but he counterpointed and I blasted back some more rhetoric.  It was all quite invigorating, I've been bored lately so having a good arguement wasn't all that unwelcome.  I was baited twice successfully but I decided not to cause trouble, I got my attention, I didn't need to make a fool of myself.

So I find myself somewhat suprised that today on a completely different conversation on a subject I'm not quite as passionate about I find him baiting me again… keep in mind that this is the first time I've ever seen him.  I decided not to take the bait, it would have strayed from the topic of the original post and I don't like showboating like that.  I have absolutely no problem arguing with people but when they stray off topic I try to let it go.  I used to be the sort of guy who always had to be right and I know the tricks.  Switching the subject is just a way to steer the arguement to something that you can win.

So apparently there's a voxer who's got it in him to get in my face some, which is great.  I don't mind, I'm bored, and if he can discredit me some that's fine too, keeps me honest.  I'm not the better man, and have no desire to be.  So bud, if you're reading this and I think you might be, the ball's in your court.
